Anodising of aluminium – a noble coating for durability and aesthetics
Anodising is an electrochemical process that produces a hard and porous aluminium oxide layer on the aluminium surface. This protective coating significantly improves the performance properties of aluminium, such as resistance to corrosion, abrasion and wear. In addition, anodising allows for a variety of colours and visual effects, making anodised aluminium a frequent choice for its aesthetic qualities.
How does the anodising process work?
-
Cleaning: Before anodising, the aluminium surface is thoroughly cleaned and degreased to ensure good adhesion of the coating.
-
Electrolysis: Aluminium components are immersed in an electrolyte (usually a sulphuric acid solution) and connected to the positive pole of a direct current source. As a result of the current flow, aluminium oxide is formed on the aluminium surface.
-
Colouring (optional): The resulting oxide layer can be coloured in various colours by absorption of organic or inorganic dyes.
-
Sealing: In order to increase corrosion resistance and improve insulating properties, the coating is subjected to a sealing process, e.g. in hot steam.
Advantages of anodising:
- Increased corrosion resistance: aluminium oxide forms a protective barrier that prevents oxidation of the aluminium.
- Hardness and abrasion resistance: The anodic coating is hard and resistant to mechanical damage.
- Electrical insulating capacity: aluminium oxide is an insulator, which is used in electronics.
- Adhesion of paints and adhesives: The porous structure of the coating improves the adhesion of paint coatings and adhesives.
- Aesthetics: Various colours and visual effects are possible.
Anodising applications:
- Architecture: Aluminium profiles, facades, windows, doors.
- Automotive: Body components, rims.
- Electronics: Appliance housings, heat sink
- Furniture: Shelves, cabinets, handles.
- Aerospace: Aircraft structural components.
