Shaft and bore grinding on conventional grinders – precision machining

Grinding is one of the finishing machining operations used to achieve high dimensional accuracy and surface quality of cylindrical components. The process involves abrading the material with a grinding wheel rotating at high speed.

What does the grinding process look like?

    • Workpiece preparation: The shaft or workpiece with a bore is suitably clamped in the machine, usually in a tusk or in a lathe chuck.

    • Setting the grinding wheel: The grinding wheel is selected according to the required surface roughness and the workpiece material. It is precisely positioned in relation to the workpiece.

    • Machining: The machine carries out reciprocating movements so that the grinding wheel gradually removes material from the surface of the shaft or bore.

    • Quality control: After machining, a thorough dimensional and geometric check of the completed workpiece is carried out.

Advantages of grinding on a conventional machine:

    • High dimensional accuracy: Very tight dimensional tolerances can be achieved.
    • Good surface quality: High surface roughness grades can be achieved.
    • Versatility: Different materials can be machined, both metals and plastics.

    Grinding applications:

    • Shaft machining: Grinding the external surfaces of shafts, achieving the correct diameters and roughness.
    • Hole machining: Grinding of internal surfaces of holes, achieving accurate dimensions and high surface quality.
    • Surface finishing: Deburring, improving surface quality after other machining processes.

    Types of grinding:

    • External grinding: Machining of external cylindrical surfaces.
    • Internal grinding: Machining of internal cylindrical surfaces (holes).
    • Face grinding: Machining of face surfaces.
