Making gears on an envelope machine – precision and efficiency.

Making gears on an envelope machine is a highly specialised process that requires precision and advanced technology. It is one of the most popular gear manufacturing methods, guaranteeing high quality and repeatability of products.

    What is envelope machining?

Peripheral machining involves milling the teeth of a gear wheel using a special tool – a worm milling cutter. This tool is shaped like a worm and rotates simultaneously with the workpiece. This results in a tooth profile that complies with the requirements of the technical standards.

    Stages of perimeter machining:

    • Material preparation: Semi-finished products in the form of shafts or discs are usually machined.

    • Tool set-up: The worm cutter is precisely aligned with the workpiece.

    • Machining: The peripheral machine carries out rotary movements with both the cutter and the workpiece, allowing the teeth to be formed in a stepwise manner.

    • Quality control: Once machining is complete, a thorough dimensional and geometric check of the completed gears is carried out.

    Advantages of envelope machining:

    • High precision: Rotary machining produces gears with very high dimensional and tooth shape accuracy.
    • Ability to machine different materials: Steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals can all be machined.
    • Wide range of applications: Gear machining is used to produce gears with different modules, number of teeth and profiles.

Use of gears made by the envelope method:

    • Engineering industry: Manufacture of gearboxes, reducers, pumps.
    • Automotive industry: Manufacture of gearboxes, differentials.
    • Aerospace industry: Manufacture of engine and drive train components.
    • Energy: Manufacture of turbines, generators.
